When dealing with multi-generational workforce comprising of matured staff, or simply older adults (i.e., those aged 50 and above as defined by MOH-C3A), it is important to know what they value, and how best to engage and communicate with them. To encourage and facilitate a positive learning environment for older adults, this course takes reference from the geragogy principles adopted by the Ministry of Health, and will help you empathise with them, understand what they value, and how they learn.

If you are overseeing a multi-generational team, part of an organisation (such as in the cleaning services, security, healthcare, F&B, etc.) supporting employment of senior workers, an adult educator/instructor involved in facilitating learning for older adults, or, you are simply looking to learn more before joining the eldercare sector, this course would be for you!

Notice

This course is delivered in a classroom based setting. Participants are required to bring your own laptop for this session.

What Is The Session About?

In the context of Singapore, the nation is facing a rapidly ageing population. As of 2021, 17.6% of the population is aged 65 and above, with 8.7 percent still actively employed in the workforce.

It was reported in July 2022 that three in four senior workers have no intention of stopping work before they turn 65. The top reasons for wanting to remain employed are to stay active, have a sense of purpose, maintain social connections and save up for old age.

Research has shown that learning in older adults is associated with positive psychosocial outcomes for individuals and communities. With an increasing proportion of older adults hopping on the lifelong learning bandwagon, both organisations and their workforce must consider the learning needs and challenges unique to senior learners to better support them in their learning journey.

The question is, how can educators, and supervisors alike, better equip themselves to facilitate and enhance the learning of senior learners and colleagues at the workplace?

What Does The Session Cover?

In this course, you will review literature (research findings) on lifelong learning in older adults, examine motivation of senior learners to learn and learn how to catalyse self-directed learning in them, as well as identify the unique learning styles and preferences of this generation of learners to help you develop appropriate training strategies.

This course prioritises mindset/attitude shifts before knowledge & skills acquisition, emphasising on self-assessment and self-awareness. The strategy used is Learn-Apply-Learn-Apply: getting participants to establish their own learner profile in their course planning and to adopt a human-centric design approach in adapting one’s training styles.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

Create a positive, holistic training environment, that is physically comfortable, psychologically safe, and intellectually stimulating.
Develop the learner’s profile of older adults engaged in learning and identify appropriate training strategies meet learning needs of senior learners; and
Engage senior learners by applying the Theory of Learning Style Preferences in older adults and the knowledge of Generational Differences.

What Are the Topics Covered?

Aspects of multi-sensory training environment
Safe space for senior learners
Potential challenges faced when training older adults and their mitigating solutions
Motivation of senior learners for lifelong learning
Profile of senior learners for lifelong learning to identify training implications and appropriate training strategies
Learning style profile and learning preferences among older adults
Generational Learning Differences and their preferred training methods & tools
